Like many small children, John Young was always fascinated when the front of their family's upright piano was removed for service. An interest in music and an ability with tools led him toward the training that would spawn Young's Piano Shop.
Graduating from Vermont's Lyndon State College in 1977, with a background in Performing Arts and Music, John was introduced to piano technology through the friendship of Clifford Hall, long time piano technician in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. On Mr. Hall's advice, John applied to and was accepted at Western Iowa Technical Community College, in Sioux City, enrolling in their nationally recognized piano technology degree program.
At the completion of studies at WITCC, John had the good fortune to be selected as a staff tuner to the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. This provided exposure to some of the world's finest pianists and an opportunity to service their pianos. It was during this time in Aspen that he was accepted into the Piano Technician's Guild.
Since the autumn of 1978, John has been working continuously in the piano business. Until about 1999 Young's Piano Shop had additional employees and was known for fine work in piano rebuilding and refinishing. Since that time, Mr. Young has concentrated his efforts to providing the occasional reconditioned piano for sale and best possible home service to clients around northern Vermont and New Hampshire. His time is also spent as business manager and performer with the area's popular Slant Six Swing Band.
